El hijo del escritor, Michel Verne, la publicó con numerosas modificaciones -nada menos que eliminando cinco capítulos y añadiendo otros veinte- y un intolerable cambio en el sentido ideológico de la obra. La novela fue publicada con el título de «Los náufragos del Jonathan», y esa versión es la que se ha traducido y publicado anteriormente en España.
